Advantages and limitations of intracoronary ultrasound for the assessment of vascular dimensions.

چکیده
Quantitative angiography has been used to validate the accuracy of the measurement obtained with the early intravascular ultrasound cathet e r ~ . ' ~ In more recent reports'-'* it was suggested that intravascular ultrasound can be superior to quantitative angiography in the assessment of complex lesions (eccentric stenoses, asymmetric lesions, vascular dissections). In this article, advantages and limitations of the two techniques in the assessment of vascular dimensions are discussed based on the results reported in the literature and of our experience in 94 patients with coronary artery disease.

Volumetric intracoronary ultrasound: a new maximum confidence approach for the quantitative assessment of progression-regression of atherosclerosis?
Quantitative assessment of atherosclerosis during its natural history and following therapeutic interventions is important, as cardiovascular disease remains the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality in industrial societies. While coronary angiography delineates the vessel lumen, permitting only the indirect determination of atherosclerotic wall changes encroaching upon the lumen, i...
متن کاملChoice of Intracoronary Imaging: When to use Intravascular Ultrasound or Optical Coherence Tomography.
Intracoronary imaging has the capability of accurately measuring vessel and stenosis dimensions, assessing vessel integrity, characterising lesion morphology and guiding optimal percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Coronary angiography used to detect and assess coronary stenosis severity has limitations. The 2D nature of fluoroscopic imaging provides lumen profile only and the assessment o...
متن کامل[Usefulness of intracoronary imaging techniques in the percutaneous treatment of in-stent restenosis].
We report a case of very late bare-metal stent restenosis, in which assessment by two intracoronary imaging techniques (intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography) revealed the underlying mechanism (neoatherosclerosis) and facilitated percutaneous treatment (direct bare-metal stent-in-stent). We also take the opportunity to briefly describe the advantages and limitations of both ...
متن کاملReconstruction and quantification with three-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound. An update on techniques, challenges, and future directions.
Conventional two-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound enables the extent, distribution, and therapy of atherosclerotic plaques to be studied as it provides a unique tomographic visualization of both the vascular lumen and wall'". The most important limitation of two-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound in pre/poststudies is the matching of the target sites for serial measurement. This problem i...
متن کاملIntracoronary ultrasound assessment of morphological and functional abnormalities associated with cardiac allograft vasculopathy.
BACKGROUND The diffuse nature of cardiac allograft vasculopathy makes early detection of the disease by traditional noninvasive methods or coronary angiography difficult. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a relation between abnormalities in vessel wall morphology, as assessed by intracoronary ultrasound, and a decreased vasodilatory response to the endothelium-dependent vasodil...
